Stimulate Hair Growth
Stimulating hair growth can be achieved through a combination of lifestyle changes, topical treatments, and sometimes medical interventions, depending on the underlying cause of hair thinning or loss.
Maintain a Healthy Diet
- Nutrients for Hair Growth: A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is crucial for healthy hair growth. Some key nutrients include:
- Biotin (Vitamin B7): Promotes healthy hair and nails. Found in eggs, nuts, seeds, and leafy greens.
- Iron: Iron deficiency can lead to hair loss. Good sources include red meat, beans, and spinach.
- Vitamin D: Linked to the health of hair follicles, and a deficiency can contribute to hair loss. Sun exposure and fortified foods are primary sources.
- Protein: Hair is made of keratin, a protein, so a diet rich in protein (chicken, fish, legumes, eggs) supports hair growth.
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fish like salmon, chia seeds, and flaxseeds, omega-3s promote scalp health and hair strength.
Scalp Care and Stimulation
- Regular Scalp Massage: Massaging the scalp increases blood circulation to hair follicles, helping deliver nutrients and oxygen that stimulate growth. You can do this with your fingers or use scalp massaging tools.
- Essential Oils: Oils like rosemary, peppermint, and lavender are believed to improve circulation in the scalp and promote hair growth. Add a few drops to your shampoo or use them in a scalp massage (diluted with a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba oil).
- Exfoliate the Scalp: Exfoliating once or twice a month helps remove dead skin cells and unclogs hair follicles, promoting healthy hair growth.
Topical Treatments
- Minoxidil (Rogaine): A well-known over-the-counter treatment clinically proven to stimulate hair growth in both men and women. It works by extending the growth phase of hair follicles.
- Hair Growth Serums: Many serums contain peptides, antioxidants, and other ingredients that may support the scalp and hair follicles. Look for products with active ingredients like keratin, biotin, or niacinamide.
- Castor Oil: Known for its high ricinoleic acid content, castor oil is believed to increase circulation and support hair growth. Apply it directly to your scalp and leave it for at least an hour before washing it out.
Lifestyle Changes
- Reduce Stress: Chronic stress can lead to hair thinning or shedding (a condition known as telogen effluvium). Practice stress-reducing activities such as yoga, meditation, or regular exercise to manage stress levels.
- Get Enough Sleep: Poor sleep can negatively impact hair health. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night to allow your body to repair and rejuvenate, including your hair follicles.
Medical Interventions
- Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy: PRP involves taking a small sample of your blood, concentrating the platelets, and injecting them into your scalp to stimulate hair growth. It is considered a safe and effective treatment for many types of hair loss.
- Laser Therapy (Low-Level Laser Therapy – LLLT): This non-invasive treatment uses light energy to stimulate hair follicles and encourage growth. It is often recommended for people with pattern hair loss.
- Microneedling: Microneedling on the scalp can increase collagen production and boost hair growth. It’s often used in conjunction with other treatments like minoxidil to enhance its effectiveness.
Supplements for Hair Growth
- Biotin Supplements: Biotin is often recommended for those looking to strengthen hair and promote growth. It is available in both food sources and as a supplement.
- Hair Growth Multivitamins: These are specifically designed with a combination of vitamins and minerals, including zinc, folic acid, and other hair-friendly nutrients.
- Collagen Supplements: Collagen supports the skin and scalp, and taking collagen supplements may help improve hair quality and growth.
Good Hair Care Habits
- Avoid Heat and Chemical Damage: Excessive use of heat styling tools or harsh chemical treatments can damage hair and slow growth. Use a heat protectant spray and minimise the use of straighteners, curlers, and blow dryers.
- Gentle Hair Washing: Wash your hair with a mild shampoo and conditioner that suits your hair type. Overwashing can strip hair of its natural oils, while too little washing can lead to clogged follicles.
- Avoid Tight Hairstyles: Constant tension on hair (e.g., tight ponytails, braids, or buns) can cause hair to break or fall out over time. Opt for looser styles that reduce stress on your hair.
Hair Follicles
Hair follicles are small, dynamic structures found in the skin that are responsible for producing hair. They play a critical role in hair growth, maintenance, and regeneration. Each hair follicle is a complex organ that goes through cycles of growth, rest, and shedding, which are essential to the life of a hair strand.
Structure of a Hair Follicle
A hair follicle consists of multiple layers and components that work together to form and grow hair. Here’s a breakdown of the main parts:
- Hair Bulb:
- Located at the base of the follicle, the hair bulb is the enlarged, rounded area where hair growth begins. It contains dermal papilla cells, which interact with surrounding cells to control hair growth.
- The matrix cells in the bulb divide rapidly to form new hair, which pushes upward through the skin.
- Dermal Papilla:
- The dermal papilla is a small, cone-shaped area located at the very bottom of the hair follicle. It contains blood vessels that provide nutrients and oxygen to the growing hair, ensuring it remains healthy.
- Outer Root Sheath:
- This layer surrounds the hair follicle and helps anchor the follicle within the skin.
- Inner Root Sheath:
- Located between the outer root sheath and the growing hair strand, the inner root sheath helps shape the hair and guide its growth.
- Sebaceous Gland:
- Each hair follicle is associated with a sebaceous (oil) gland, which produces sebum, a natural oil that moisturises both the scalp and hair. Sebum helps keep hair flexible and prevents it from becoming dry and brittle.
- Arrector Pili Muscle:
- This small muscle is attached to the hair follicle. It contracts in response to cold or emotional stimuli, causing the hair to stand upright (commonly known as “goosebumps”).
- Hair Shaft:
- The hair shaft is the visible part of the hair that extends above the skin. It is composed of keratin, a fibrous protein that gives hair its strength and resilience. The hair shaft itself is made up of three layers:
- Cuticle (outermost layer): The protective layer made of overlapping cells.
- Cortex: The thickest part of the hair, containing the pigment that gives hair its colour.
- Medulla: The innermost layer, present in thicker hairs.

FAQs
1. What is a hair transplant?
A hair transplant is a surgical procedure where hair follicles from one part of the body (usually the back or sides of the head) are transplanted to areas experiencing thinning or baldness. It is an effective solution for restoring natural hair growth.
2. Am I a good candidate for a hair transplant?
Good candidates for a hair transplant are individuals experiencing thinning hair or bald spots who have sufficient donor hair available. It’s best to schedule an appointment for a consultation where a specialist will assess your scalp and hair loss to determine if a hair transplant is the right option for you.
3. How long does the procedure take?
The duration of a hair transplant procedure varies depending on the size of the area being treated and the number hair types of grafts required. On average, the procedure can take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours.
4. Is the hair transplant procedure painful?
Hair transplant procedures are typically performed under local anaesthesia, meaning you should feel little to no pain during the surgery. Some patients may experience mild discomfort during recovery, but this is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain medication.
5. How long is the recovery time?
Most patients can return to normal activities within 2 to 5 days after the procedure. Full recovery of the whole ear and scalp can take a couple of weeks. It’s essential to follow post-operative care instructions provided by your surgeon to ensure proper healing.

Hair Transplant Surgery Techniques:
The current standard technique for hair transplants is called: Follicular Unit Extraction.
FUE is an advanced surgical hair restoration technique. It is much less invasive than the older style, traditional FUT hair transplants.
This surgical technique involves removing individual follicle units, known as grafts, and does not leave a linear scar, or require any stitches. Hair follicles are extracted from the donor area, at the back of the scalp. Incisions are then made into the frontal, mid scalp or crown area, and the grafts are placed into the incisions where they will imbed and heal, allowing new hairs to regrow from a previously inactive or balding area.
Sapphire Blade FUE
Sapphire FUE utilizes sapphire blades, which are incredibly precise and gentle, to create tiny incisions for implanting hair follicles. This approach offers numerous benefits, including minimal scarring, faster healing, and a closer, natural hairline. The use of sapphire blades allows for greater control over angle and direction, resulting in a more authentic and seamless appearance.
DHI via CHOI pen
During hair transplant surgery with DHI, individual hair follicles are extracted from the donor area, they are then placed into the Direct Hair Implantation tool.
The DHI tool can then be used to make incisions and directly implant the follicle into the new incision in one motion. This technique is most commonly used for ‘non-shave’ surgeries that are typically under 3000 grafts.
